The Clarion River Watershed hosts a hilly/mountainous terrain with heavily forested uplands and valleys; remnant tracts of virgin hemlocks near Cooksburg; and above Piney Dam, 51.7 miles of a National Wild and Scenic River. The Clarion once ran black from intense pollution from tanneries, pulp mills, and coal mines. Its recovery has been remarkable.
