The Federal Flood Control Act passes on June 22. The act provides funding and direction for the construction of a system of 14 reservoir dams in the Ohio River basin for the protection of Pittsburgh and the reduction of flood heights in the Ohio Valley generally.

Pennsylvania passes the Clean Streams Law which establishes once and for all that water pollution is a public nuisance.

Cathedral of Learning finished. Started in 1926.
1939

All nine locks and dams are now completed on the Allegheny River, extending 62 miles up from its mouth. Locks and dams are designed with the ability to maintain consistent, predictable river heights chiefly for river-based transport of barges and, at the time, steamboats.

Crooked Creek Reservoir, the first one built in PA by the Corps of Engineers, as outlined in 1912 Flood Commission Report.

City of Pittsburgh population peaks at 676,806.

Allegheny County population peaks at 1,628,587.
